Staying Happy As You Age

Regardless of how old you are staying happy is important. Life in general is better for everyone when we are happy so why don’t more people work at it? Things will change in your life for better or worse and it is important to roll with the changes and keep your mood upbeat. Some things are beyond your control but positive thinking and prior planning can ease the impact of these things. Our Kalamazoo senior living communities have some advice on how you can age and stay happy and we hope it helps.

First off it is important to stay physically, mentally and socially active. Coupling this with a positive mental attitude enables you to stay happy even during the hard times and is extremely beneficial to your health. Eating well and in general practicing a healthy lifestyle will help keep your body going strong and share a feeling of wellbeing with your mind. These are important as it is difficult to stay happy if your mind and body are not feeling good.

Next you need to reduce the stress in your life. Stress is unhealthy to say the least and tends to dampen your happiness. Make sure you have some down time every day. You could enjoy a good book, movie, or even listen to music. Regardless of what it is, do something that takes your mind off of the toils of life and just relax. Mix in a healthy 8 hours of sleep and you will be set. Sleep is necessary but too much or too little is not so good. Spend time with people you enjoy being with, you need to laugh and have fun. The saying “Laughter is the best medicine” is far more true than people think. Laughing reduces stressed related hormones in the body and increases beneficial ones like endorphins.

Lastly make sure that you are getting the minerals that your body needs. A lack of iron can lead to fatigue which doesn’t help stress at all. You need to keep up with your nutrition as most of them can have an impact on your ability to stay happy. You need to make sure you are getting the basics like greens, whole grains, berries, nuts, red fruit, fish, and specific spices like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and garlic. These things add what you need to fight the aging process and keep your health up. Too much sugar is a bad thing, along with white flour and refined carbs. These lead to raised insulin levels and possibly memory loss.

These are just a few things that will help you enjoy your life in your old age. Happiness is something that we all need a little more of and it is quite easy to achieve.
